In addition to the classes listed below, our program collaborates with the Human Development department, the English department, and the Virginia Tech library, where language software and labs exist. There are learning opportunities all over campus. There are no promises made, as individual classes are not offered every single semester. However, a good faith effort is made to get each student into the content are of his or her interest.

Vocational
All students are expected to work or to be trying to work. Filling out applications, interviewing, and search in the community and on line are all ways that a student can actively participate in job search. Once students secure employment, they begin to work on an independent relationship with their employer. Student work with case management and other service providers to build an employment goal for when they leave post secondary services.
Independent Living
Students and staff work together to build functional cooking and shopping skills. They begin with planning a series of menus that they will cook once/week. From the menu they build a shopping list and they go to a variety of area grocery stores and develop consumer awareness, self checkout skills, and, in general, how to "use" a grocery store. We introduce budgeting skills, cooking skills, shopping skills, as well as social rules of group activities. A fun way to lean together!
Community Access
Students are all encouraged to become more familiar with their community, whether that is the campus of Virginia Tech, or Blacksburg, or the NRV. This means being connected to bus services, public libraries, local law enforcement, recreation outlets, etc. Students engage in a variety of activities to connect with their community. Participation in campus wide activities is a great way, as is visiting the farmer's market or going on field trips to Roanoke. Students ride the BT to and from campus, and all students learn how to get from one place to another using the Hokie Express.
Leisure/Recreation
Students are all encouraged to develop and individualized fitness routine. This will allow our students to continue to mature as young adults, in a health manner. It is proven through research and statistics that the majority of the students that we serve are at risk for diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. We work with each student to design a routine that will fit their lifestyle. That ranges from walking, to lifting weights, to playing team games. The campus Rec. Sports programming also offers a wide variety of choices for individual work outs.
